First day on my own

I'm a connoisseur of food, I love trying out different kinds of food, different tastes from different lands, different styles of cooking. I love food.

But I'm not much of a cook myself. I can find out what is missing with somebody's cooking but don't know how to make anything myself. So my mother always used to fret n worry about me, she always thought once I get married I would have to buy food from hotels everyday and my in-laws would throw out the girl-who-can't-cook.

When my mother had to go away for a week yesterday, she was in a dilemma. What was I going to do here all by myself?! I couldn't go with her either coz I have a job here that I can't just leave n go. She tried to convince me to go stay with relatives. Anyway, I managed to send her away promising I'll be alright, but I had no clue how I was going to manage.

Left to my own devices, it was more fun than I expected :) I learnt that the kitchen is an amazing place once u have it all to urself :)

For breakfast n lunch I only had to heat up n eat what was already in the fridge, so it was ok. Dinner was a question mark. There was dosa left over from breakfast, I just had to make some curry. I put some green peas n dal into water thinking I'll call up my mother over phone to get cooking instructions.

But in the nick of time she was not available to give instructions. For a second there I panicked coz by the time my father returned from office either I had to cook something or buy something from somewhere.

Then I thought "how hard can it be?" n suddenly it was like the mischievous side of myself woke up. I felt totally confident, ready to try anything. After all, the ingredients that go into most dishes are much the same.

I cut some onions, chillies n garlic, sauted in oil a bit put the green peas n dal with some water n masala, let it boil for some time n "peas-dal curry" was ready :)

It was fun :) my father was surprised n happy ...

guess it goes on to show ANYBODY can cook ...doesn't have to be perfect or exotic.... just some onion, chilly n masala will do all the trick :)
