call it what you will

"There are some who are in darkness
And the others are in light
And you see the ones in brightness
Those in darkness drop from sight"

I don't know in what context Brecht might have said them.

I was reading a book on prehistory. The author had quoted these lines from Bertolt Brecht. He was trying to say how those civilizations that had not left a clear archaeological record are difficult to trace down and interpret; and how they are 'lost' to our understanding.

But these words caught my eye, they made me think.

Money, power and fame - the most important driving force of our society today.

Everybody just loves to be in the limelight; and it starts from a very young age. If somebody wants to be the topper in the class, another wants to the most pretty face... an urge to be noticed and admired by one and all.

I know it is a basic human tendency to be loved and acknowledged.

But the sprawling reality TV industry..."30 seconds of fame"..."American Idol"...you name it.
Our obsession with fair skin... with the glitz and glamour of the movie industry... our zeal to flaunt brand names and the latest gadgets...

What does that show... about us as a society? Is it some kind of "moral degeneration" as some seem to argue? Or is it something else?

Worth pondering over... don't you think?
